Reason for Nomination:
I would like to nominate my vet because he is kind, caring and always
there when I need him. Nothing is ever
too much trouble for him.
My last dog was diabetic and Michael did everything in his power for
him. We had to inject him twice a day
for the last 2 ˝ years of his life.
Sadly we had to part with him last December and Michael was so kind and
comforting to me. I could never thank
him enough for all he did for Prince . Michael gave me 2 ˝ more years with him and

I was heartbroken that

I now have a new dog and he is attending to him and Ben really likes
him. Michael has a great way with
animals. I have been going to vets 20
years now, out of that I know Michael 4 years and there is no stuffyness or
abruptness about him. He is very
natural and down to earth with a sense of humour and I think he should be vet
of the year without a doubt.

Reason for Nomination:
During the past year I have used the services of the practice on a regular
basis. All of my three pets have had
problems.
Fred had a cruciate ligament replacement. The operation was performed
with efficiency and sensitivity. There was no need to fear injections because
of the cleanliness of the premises and the professionalism of the staff.. Fred is now well and happy. He continues to have treatment for
arthritis. He was a nervous fearful little rescue dog. Now he bounces into the hospital without a
care in the world.
Nellie, the GSD, had treatment for gastric troubles which necessitated a
stay in the hospital. Again she is well and happy following first class care.
Puss has an immune deficiency disorder.
She is seen and treated on a regular basis. Without the care received it is doubtful if
she would be alive.
What is particularly helpful is the willingness of all of the staff to
take telephone enquiries, guide anxious owners and alleviate anxiety. This is a real bonus for me because of
distance from the practice.
It gives me great pleasure to nominate the team under the leadership of
John O’Mahony.

Carl McAuliffe recently joined the clinic and would be able to perform the
spinal surgery. John quickly referred Mulder to his care. Carl's great surgical
skill and outstanding animal care was coupled with John's usual warmth,
interest, openness and kindness throughout the entire diagnosis period and
after surgery as well. We knew, once again, we were at the right veterinary
hospital. If there were a chance for Mulder to get better, whatever was
needed would be made available.
What we know to be a complicated and lengthy surgery was followed by a week of
post-operative care at the clinic. In addition to the veterinary nursing staff
both Carl McAuliffe and Mairead Walsh were taking care of Mulder while he
recovered. Whenever we called for an update we were put immediately in touch
with Carl. We were never made to feel that we were interfering or taking up
time. Despite the clinic being very busy, our calls were always welcome.
We also know how caring and open the veterinary nursing staff were, and how
gentle and kind their interaction with Mulder was. We had many signs of this
care, and not only from the nursing staff but the vets too. While in the clinic
Mulder had not been eating enough so Carl made a point of keeping fresh chicken
in the fridge. This kind of detail helped us relax somewhat in a time when our
dog was out of our own care.
The generosity and care of the staff continued to be obvious after we had taken
Mulder home as well. Whenever we called the clinic for information or to book a
check-up, not only did we get whatever answers we needed but were always asked
how Mulder was doing. We always felt there was a genuine interest in his
wellbeing and improvement and this told us that he must have been in the best
of hands while at the clinic.
Once we had taken Mulder home, each visit to the clinic for follow-up was
greeted by nursing staff with warmth, interest and lots of pets. On one
occasion we took video images to show Carl how Mulder was moving about in the
garden. Carl wanted to show these to others working that day and everyone there
wanted to see the images and Mulder as well and were genuinely delighted with
his improvement. Again, this kind of obvious interest in the dog's progress
made us feel he must have been well looked after while away from us.

Reason for Nomination:
This practice has been looking after my own animals,
dogs and cats, for at least 20 years,
and over that time have on many occasions successfully and patiently treated
various mishaps and illnesses.
However, about 8 years ago I became
deeply involved in the care and neutering of feral cats and rehoming their
kittens after taming. Whatever the number of cats (sometimes up
to 12 on one day from various people who are all involved in trapping) and
whatever the time of day that we bring them in, we are invariably welcome, the
cats are neutered with the least possible delay,(and are routinely treated with
Stronghold). This prompt attention to stressed and frightened cats
means that they can be brought home for recovery and release with as little
delay as possible. When they are brought home, they usually run
off, and then stop and look around as if to say "what was all that
about".
There are many stories of the care and compassion shown to these feral cats and
also to the injured or sick cats and kittens that have been treated. e.g.
there were 5 kittens apparently blind - not just normal severe swelling and
discharge - and suffering badly from cat flu. These were all
slightly anesthetised, their eyes examined and John confirmed that they all had
eyes. With treatment, indeed these kittens made a good
recovery.
There was the elderly
skeletal longhaired white cat, with serious ear cancer, found dying under a
hedge. She was brought in late one night, fed, and the following morning
had an operation on her ear. She is now boss of the
household.
There are the road traffic accident victims who are brought in by other people,
treated free of charge, and kept until they can be placed in a foster home,
returned to their owners, or rehomed.
We could not function as we do without
the support and help of this practice. All the spaying and neutering and
vaccinations for the cats or their kittens is done at a much reduced
cost. Every single one of the team cares deeply for the animals they
treat, and helps us in every way they can. I would like to nominate
every one of them for this award, and hope that they will be successful.

Nearly all are the victims of
neglect and abuse. You can see some of their stories at www.booksteps.ie/cats. Some are rescued
as a result of our trap, neuter, release programme; some are dumped; some are
brought in by the public; some are brought to Fachtna's practice to be
euthanased because their humans can't be bothered - sometimes Fachtna can
persuade the clients to let the ACS care for the animal; sometimes he can't.
Throughout the past years
Fachtna Collins (vet) and Jennifer Carroll (vet assistant) have provided
veterinary care to all our survivors. Fachtna tirelessly responds to calls at
all hours of the night and often gives free and discounted veterinary advice
and care. Jennifer goes above and beyond the call of duty.
Outside of her regular
practice hours she works with me to keep the kittens and cats healthy and ready
to be rehomed; she works on our West Cork trap, neuter, release programme at
all hours of the day and night; she gives free advice to the public on
neutering and animal care; she responds to reports of animal abuse; she advises
me when animals need to visit Fachtna and when food, warmth and care are
sufficient.
If anyone deserves Veterinary
Pet Care Awards it is these two splendid people. They both go above and beyond the basic roles of vet and assistant to
provide care for neglected animals who desperately need it. And Jennifer,
in particular, goes on to provide better life circumstances and a better life
for the cats, kittens, dogs and puppies of West Cork.

The animals in my care all
seem to meet with veterinary needs out of surgery hours! Firstly when taking my
foster-son to his Sunday afternoon job,
we find a tiny unconscious kitten, no bigger than the palm of my hand in the
middle of the road. Straight round to TJ's house we go and after careful
examination, wound cleaning, warming and two small injections, the little
kitten responds positively! We are dispatched homeward with cream and another
injection to administer in 72 hours. Kitten makes fabulous recovery and now rules the roost at our home!
Again on a Sunday, this time
Friday evening 8pm, our rescued ex-foxhound bitch
appears outside the back door with her left eye hanging out of it's socket. I immediately ring TJ. He's actually out walking on
the mountain with his children and their two rescued dogs. He says he'll drop
in on his way down home, about 15 mins.
One look at Lily-Sue's eye
and he bids me to the surgery and follows me in as soon as he's dropped his
children and dogs home. Lily-Sue required anaesthetic to enable TJ to place her
eye-ball back in the socket. She also had to have the eye-lid stitched to stop
the eye-ball popping back out whilst the area was so swollen. We came home with
a dopey Lily-Sue, anti-inflamant tablets, pain-killers and eye-ointment for
when the stitches came out after two weeks. The following day TJ drove up to
see that her eye was ok and a week later called in again to monitor progress.
Lily-Sue is terribly afraid of the male species, but has come to trust TJ and
obviously knows that he is not going to harm her. Her eye stayed in place and I
removed the two stitches and administered the eye-drops. She has lost some of
the sight in the eye but can see a little thanks to the prompt actions of TJ.
The last two of these
incidents occurred this year, Jess in March and Lily-Sue in July. We keep many
animals, horses, dogs, cats, ducks and sheep. TJ is a superb vet who is always
compassionate, caring and professional. He goes beyond the call of duty in his
work and we are blessed to know him.

I was advised by her
Psychologist to get her a dog approx three years ago. Although we have had past
experience with the excellent care and service from this practice over many

Practise/Surgery: Mackessy's
Veterinary
Vet:
Ita Walsh & Denis Mackessy
Address of Practise/Surgery:lower rd,
newmarket,co.cork
Practise/Surgery Telephone: not provided
Reason for Nomination:
We have three dogs-Maizie,
All three have needed their
fair share or veterinary services over the years, from the usual ailments to
vaccinations to neuterings. The challenge of choosing the right vetenary
service was on par with finding the best GP service for our kids. Ita and her
husband Denis (both vets) came recomended and, five years on the reasons are
obvious.
On paper I feel I could never
do justice to the level of service we have recieved, both in the care they have
given to our dogs, and in the courtesy they have extended to us as a family.
They have consistently been professional and dedicated, and their commitment to
animal care is transparent. They have always been wonderfully compassionate and
sympathetic, and are incredibly generous with their advice and time-hence three
healthy happy dogs and equally contented owners! For the above alone,I truly
believe they deserve an award..however, there’s more....
On friday 12th as I was
busying myself in the kitchen, I was vaguely aware of the dogs barking in the
garden. When it became more insistent,I went to investigate and was horrified to
find that Maizie had a hedgehog in her mouth.I managed to rescue the hedgehog but one side of its face was very
badly mutilated. With the full understanding that I was only affording it a
peaceful death,I put it in a box and went about my business. However, as the
day dragged on it became apparent that this hedgehog had no intention of dying.
I gave him water which he drank and, though most certainly in pain, appeared
quite lively. Now I had a real dilemma...he wasnt going to die but with his
injuries I knew he wouldnt survive if I returned him back to nature. I began to
wonder if he could be saved, and if he could, who on earth would be willing????
I rang Hedgehog rescue in
Within a few minutes she was
examining the hedgehog and on initial assesment, and to my sheer delight she
felt she could possibly save him...he would need to be stitched, given
antibiotics and some t.l.c.before being released back into the wild. To confirm
this plan of action however, she needed to put the hedgehog to sleep with gas
to make a more accurate assesment of his injuries. This proved to be a
difficult task as she was unable to get the mask over his face..He had it well
tucked under his belly.Undeterred, Ita's solution was to make a makeshift
chamber through which she was able to administer the gas.
With the hedgehog finally
asleep,Ita was able to examine him properly. Unfortunately, she determined that
his injuries were numerous and severe...including a broken jaw and nose, and
felt that the kindest option was to put him to sleep.
I was once again overwhelmed
by a level of commitment that goes beyond duty...only this time it was no ones
pet. This time it was a wild animal. And this time Ita would not accept
payment.
Judges...if you are not convinced that Ita and her veterinary service are
truly worthy of this award, then I have failed to adequately articulate their
merits...
Many thanks,

The kindness of Evelyn, when I called into the surgery about one cat. I work in St Francis’ home for the elderly

Pussy is very important in
their lives – he became very ill a few weeks ago – would not eat or groom himself.
Evelyn asked me, bring him to the surgery. Cathal examined him, poor Pussy had two
rotton teeth and was generally run down.
Both Evelyn and Cathal were so kind to us and Pussy. He was kept over night after his op – with
wonderful care. I collected him the
following day – my goodness ! What a wonderful change! He has since been in
wonderful form, chats to all the residents and speaks of his time at the vets

Cathal and Evelyn were great and so kind.

Address of Practise/Surgery:183 Botanic Avenue , Glasnevin,
Practise/Surgery Telephone:01 8375543
Reason for Nomination:
We would like to nominate the
entire practice team of the Anicare group. Having won the award last year -
they are still excelling in their top class care of animals and indeed may I
say their clients in all their clinics, as we have attended all.
Bearing this in mind, we would like to single out Maria Ginty - vertinary
nurse/receptionist. Maria to us is like the backbone of the Botanic
Clinic. She was one of the first people we met - when we started to
attend with our first cat Beau.
We have dealt with her over the years
and know she is always at the end of a phone - if we have any problems
or questions and we know she is like this for everyone, as we have
seen her in action - she has a very caring manner and has the gift of putting
everyone at ease.
There have been times, when she has been her up to her eyes in the clinic and
still taking phonecalls - and been able to make that person on the phone feel
they have her full attention and indeed being able to assure them and advise
them re their pet.
Marie is prehaps the reason the entire veterinary nursing staff and reception
staff are so brilliant in the Anicare Group, Maria has taken them under her wing and she is a great role model to
follow. She is the wise owl !
Best of luck Maria

Address of Practise/Surgery:
Practise/Surgery Telephone:01 8375543

Reason for Nomination:
Even as a human I have not received the standard of
care that my cats enjoy whenever they
attend Anicare in Glasnevin. Granted, whenever I visit my GP he doesn't attempt
to shave me or put me in a cage, but were I ill, and a domestic cat or dog, I
would put my faith in Anicare to get me well again!
Over the past 7 years my cats have (unfortunately) experienced almost every
illness under the sun. From the aftermath of fights to urinary tract
infections, skin complaints to gastric illnesses - and my first port of call
has always been Anicare in Glasnevin.
Though my brood are humble tabby moggies (and not as exotic as some of the
species of plant in the nearby Botanic Gardens) the vets and staff at Anicare
have always treated each of them as 5 star guests. It never ceases to amaze me
how Triangle (who is a shy, jumpy and retiring cat at home) comes out of her
shell whenever she visits Anicare. She must feel safer there than she does at home....charming!!
Not only are the vets themselves so pleasant and obliging but I have received
no end of useful advice over the phone from the nursing team who I must also
commend. In particular Maria, who has always been a rock of support and
understanding when I have rung up in a panic about a sick or injured cat.
She is a wonderful front-of-house representative for Anicare Glasnevin and
always manages to keep a cool head no matter how busy the practice seems.
Over the years I have come to expect a certain standard of veterinary
excellence from Anicare but in the past year I have found the standards to be
surpassed by the addition of a new vet, Mary Geary. She is possibly the most
thorough and patient practitioner I have ever encountered. Her holistic approach
to animal health is refreshing.
One event stands out in my mind: It was an extremely busy weekend morning in
Anicare Glasnevin and the waiting room was heaving with every conceivable shape
and size of cat and dog. A man carried a wire haired terrier in the door in his
arms. It was a dog he had rescued from
the pound, only the day before but it had cut its paw pad quite badly en route
to the vets for its initial check up. The dog was bleeding profusely all over
the waiting room and seemed absolutely terrified and distrustful of humans.
He cowered under a chair. He had obviously had a very tough beginning in life.
The dog was taken into the surgery to be attended to by Mary and the entire
waiting room listened to the dog growling and barking ferociously as he was
stitched up. People began to wince at the apparent bad behaviour of this dog as
he was really bringing the house down with noise. People were pitying Mary for
having to deal with a dog so 'vicious'
You could hear the dog's new owner becoming more and more aggitated also but
Mary Geary never raised her voice once. Eventually she calmed the dog down and
it gaily exited the surgery, paw intact.
The general consensus in the waiting room was that the dog was vicious. However
when someone passed a comment about this afterwards, Mary just shook her head
and said 'No he was just very very frightened. He didn't have a good start so
far in life, so it was no wonder he was scared and barking.'
It is patience, and a great empathy with animals that makes Mary stand head and
shoulders over many other vets I have met. To sum up, every pet owner thinks
their pet(s) are the most important pets in the whole world and Anicare never
forget this when they are treating them.

In June 2008, I noticed a large lump on the leg of my
dog Molly. It was late on a Saturday
of the June bank holiday weekend………. When I called there was no issue
with seeing Molly straight away even though she was not a previous
patient. I met Mary Geary on the first visit and she seemed so
knowledgable and so considerate.
Within minutes the lump had
been scanned and biopsed. When the
test results came back a few days later she called me at 10.30 at night because
she knew how anxious I was. She did not just treat Molly but looked after my
emotional well being as well. Unfortunately it was bad news as the tumour
was malignant. She removed it the next day and Molly recovered
well. All was well for about six weeks(during which my other dog Ally
needed her anal glands removed which Mary also did a fantastic job on).
Then Molly got very ill, thanks to Mary's expertise and fast work she diagnosed
immune mediated thrombocytopenia.
Emergency blood tests where rushed off to UCD to confirm the diagnosis.
Thank God Mary started the treatment straight away as Molly had a platelet
count of .2 and would have died if she had not. That weekend she was with
Molly all the time, calling me at 8 in the morning and 10 at night with
progress reports.
Molly has continued to improve though is not out of the woods yet. Each
week she has phone me at
Mary does not just treat Molly’s
physical problems, she knows that she is a beloved member of the family, who we
could not bear to loose so soon. She is always so considerate of our
feelings and fears and makes us feel so reassured that Molly is getting the
best chance she can. I would not trust Molly's care to any one else.
Mary is the kindest and most hard working vet I have ever met and totally
deserves this award.

Practise/Surgery:Animal
Welfare Vetinary Clinic
Team: Team, John Hardy
Vet: Michael Brady (& John Hardy
- hard to seperate)
Address of Practise/Surgery:
Practise/Surgery Telephone:016714303
Reason for Nomination:
Our family has been attending
the animal Welfare Clinic for over 20 years, with all our cats and dogs.
The vets have all shown
compassion, care and fun with all our animals, and complete understanding of us
when our loved ones are in distress, and they take great care & diligence
with each of them. They know our pets are members of our family, each lasting
with us for at least 13years (Nermal is 17 late Aug!) Going to them every
year with our pets for check ups, they know each of them, and sooth our own
worries or stress over the situation with the care they take.
But it has been John and
Michael that have been there for us in the darkest times of having to let our
pets go.
John Hardy was there in Dec
97 when we had to put our dog Buddy down, and Michael was there a year later in
Dec 98 to put our cat Holly down. Loosing
two long term pets in our family over the space of a year, was a huge blow to
us, and when loosing Holly, my mother broke down in the vet clinic. Michael
gave us space, and a room to wind down having been there as she passed. And a
few days later Michael rang my mum to check up to see how she was doing. It was
just a phone call, but it showed how much they genuinely care for each of their
patients/clients and why we still return to them year after year with our new
pets.
I can not speak highly enough
of this practice, as their opening hours are perfect for every working person’s
hours, the prices are excellent, as you can never put a price on the care that
they have shown to us & our pets.
I know my family would love
to find out that this practice or John or Michael have won the awards, as they
might see the love and admiration in each of us as we leave relived with a
better pet, but just to have them notified that they really have shown care
beyond any 'bed side' requirement of any profession, it should be noted about
these guys.
I really hope to see come
September that I can go back into the clinic just to congratulate them all.

& Bainbridge Vets (A & B Vets)

Tel/E mail 01-2987510

Team nomination – contact All
of team
Vet nomination – contact Malcolm Argyle
Vet Nurse/other nomination- contact Debbie
Hussey
Reason for Nomination:
Argyle and Bainbridge have been
our vets since 1983 and during that time have given great care to our five cats
(2 of whom have gone to cat heaven after a long and healthy life).
The 3 present encumbents would not hear of us changing to a vet nearer
to home. They say that they hate all
vets on principle, but the ones in Dundrum are not so bad considering that they
are vets !
Tom has just returned from a two-night stay – he had been feeling poorly
and needed some tests. Happily his results were alright and with a couple of
tooth extractions, he is home and happy again.
He says he was admitted right away, no waiting around on a trolley, had
his tests and his dental work next morning, allowed to rest over night and then
discharged. And the nurses were lovely – a little deaf after two days of Tom howling,
but they will recover, Tom says !.
Oscar is a one eyed rescue cat who started life minus one eye. We took him to A & B Vets, expecting to
hear that it would be kinder to put him to sleep, but Malcolm Argyle said apart
form the missing eye, Oscar was clean and healthy and deserved a chance. His other infected eye was treated, the bad
eyelid stitched up and now, 12 years later, he is the one eyed ruler of this
house. Mind you he still hates vets !
Over the years A&B Vets have been very caring and always available
in time of trouble and that includes phone calls at 1 o clock in the morning
some years ago when there was a worrying situation with one of the cats.
We have been clients since 1983 and of course during that time two of
our cats have passed on. This is always
upsetting but once again our treatment by all in the practice has been
outstanding. They have been caring and
sympathetic and helped us at a difficult time.
On one occasion when the one-eyed Oscar was an in-patient we think he
spread terror amongst the nurses, even Malcolm Argyle quailed at the thought of
removing a catheter from Oscar without back up from the nurses ! You can
collect him in the morning he said. I
wouldn’t work on him this evening without the nurses.
In the following morning we got a
phone call – clever little cat you have there – he removed the catheter himself
last night !
Needless to remark, the whole practice was delighted to see Oscar leave
later that day, although I think one young girl who was doing work experience
to see if she would like veterinary science, subsequently took up accounting !
I took a vote today, and our three elderly crotchety ginger Tom, One
eyed Oscar and a somewhat flighty young Lucy (who arrived unwanted with 3
kittens) all agree that although on principle, they hate the vets, still Argyle
and Bainbridge deserve an award for being truly caring, professional and having
both humour and compassion.

Practise/Surgery:Blackrock
Veterinary Clinic
Team:
Vet: Eamonn Moore
Other: MELANIE
Address of Practise/Surgery:
Practise/Surgery Telephone:2889641
Reason for Nomination:
It is well past the time when
I should have nominated Melanie as Veterinary Nurse of the Year. Melanie has
been Eamonn Moore's right-hand-woman for many years now, so much so that they
are almost like a double-act, with Melanie with her characteristic openness and
clarity decerning what the problem is before rapidly passing the pet on to
Eamonn's wonderful care.
From the first time I met Melanie with my previous dog Kruger, she has always
been kindness and attentiveness itself. Melanie has a wonderful warm heart and
generous spirit, combined with knowledge and professionalism.
For many years I needed to bring my ultra-sensitive Golden Retreiver dog Kruger
to Blackrock Vet Clinic as often as two or three times a month. On every
occasion Melanie was so gentle and kind with him, reassuring him and treating
him with the "kid gloves" he needed. He used to run up to her to be
cuddled and reassured if he was unwell, and I always knew if I had to leave him
that she would take particular care of him. He was never treated by Melanie as
just another dog needing some proceedure, but as Kruger, the sensitive
"Gentleman of the Practice" who needed extra-special allowance made
for his gentle nature.
Over the years Melanie
was first port-of-call in the practice, quickly finding out what was wrong and clarifying
what to do.Her kind and reassuring voice gave immediate relief on the many
occasions when he was ill.
She always managed to fit
Kruger into Eamonn's schedule at a moment's notice, voicing genuine care and
concern if he was unwell. It is very obvious that just as Eamonn immediately
got to the heart of the problem, Melanie was there by his side ready and calmly
efficent in assisting him. When Eamonn Moore and ourselves came to the
conclusion over some weeks that he needed to be put to sleep, Melanie was the
essence of quiet descretion and tact. She instinctivly was subdued and silent,
allowing us to absorb the enormity of the step we were having to take.
When after some months after his demise we decided to consider getting a new
pup/pups, Melanie was a great help above and beyond the call of duty. She took
a personal interest in our needs, looked up good breeders and let me know where
the dogshows were on so I could be sure that the dog "came from a good
home".
She wisely warned me that I would not be able to replace Kruger-he was a
one-off, and I should not try to. She met me at dogshows and showed me the
ropes, suggesting that perhaps I should consider changing breed if I kept
looking for a replacement who could never measure up to Kruger.
On other occasions when Melanie was at dogshows with her own Staffordshire
terriers, she made a point of meeting up with the owner of the sire whose pups
we were thinking of getting. After we got our two new Goldens Melanie kept an
eye on the competitions, letting me know how their father was getting on and
introducing herself to the breeder, letting him know of their progress.
She takes a very personal interest in the progress of Josh and Homer, and
encourages me to bring them to the Show Arena in Cloghran where I could learn
to train them to show, assuring me it would be great fun. I do not know if I
have time to follow this path, but I know Melanie would very generously give me
all the advice and help I need and introduce me to one an all if I do. When waiting
for a few minutes for Eamonn one day when they were only a few months old, she
put my two chaps through their paces. It was facinating to see how assured she
was in getting their attention and getting them to adopt the show stance!
Melanie is a super nurse, wise beyond
her young years, fun, kind, professional and knowledgable. I should have
nominated her many times before now. Her excellence was overshadowed by the
brilliance of Eamonn-but in her own right she deserves every accolade for such
consistently high standard in every way. She is a super nurse and I do hope
will be Veterinary Nurse of the Year.

Team: Aidan Miller
Address of Practise/Surgery:
Reason for Nomination:
I would like to say that I am
nominating the practice for care over a long period of time - unfortunately
Hebe lived for only one year. Despite this she greatly enriched my life and I
am thankful for the exceptionally high level of care she (and I) received from
all members of staff at the
As a consequence of being stray as a kitten, Hebe was terrified of most humans.
When she had her first set of vaccinations she was visibly scared (her ears
quivered). However, the vet (James) that administered the vaccinations cuddled
her afterwards to help prevent her becoming scared of visiting the vets.
Nursing staff were helpful and advised on issues such as a cattery, over the
Christmas period, and also helped arrange insurance cover. Áine, in particular,
was extremely helpful when Hebe got ill and liaised with the insurance company
about everything to do with the insurance policy so that I did not have to deal
with it.
The main illness from which Hebe suffered was leukaemia which developed when
she was about 10 months old. Initially, she developed an eye problem,
entropion, in her left eye which was treated with surgery and eye drops.
However, when the same problem developed in the other eye coupled with a nail
bed infection one of the vets (Aidan) suggested that she should be tested for
FIV and FLV at the same time as she had surgery on the eye. Unfortunately, she
was FLV positive. The way in which I was told prepared me both for the
likelihood that she was FLV positive and gave me a realistic long-term
prognosis.
During the course of Hebe's illness she needed a five-day-course of interferon.
Unfortunately, my grandmother had a hip operation at the same time and I needed
to leave
Loss of claws and a bladder infection required emergency trips to the vets and
they were always calm, confident and caring. She was scheduled into what were
extremely busy practice hours as well as after hours and I always felt that
there was time that I could ask questions about her condition.
I am extremely grateful that the prognosis I was given was a realistic one as
well as still instilling me with confidence that the practice were doing
everything possible to save her life and if that was not possible then to make
her more comfortable. She was treated with kindness and expertise and when she
became too ill I was gently made to realise that it was time for her to be put

Practise/Surgery:T. Rennick's
Vet: Thomas Rennick
Other:
Address of Practise/Surgery:Church View, Tuam, Co.
Practise/Surgery Telephone:093 24546
Reason for Nomination:
I have had animal companions
since early childhood, and I can honestly say that Tom Rennick is
unquestionably the most wonderful, compassionate vet I have ever had the
pleasure of dealing with. My current animals suffer from a variety of incurable
illnesses - Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Epilepsy, Heart problems - but Tom has
successfully cured any animal I have brought to him which can be cured.
This, of course, is to be expected of any Vet worth his salt. What makes Tom so special however, is his
understanding of the animals needs, his compassion not only for them but for
their distressed human when things go wrong, his willingness to advise and
help me do the best I possibly can for each of the animals I have taken into my
home and into my heart.
To highlight just one instance where Tom has been invaluable to me, I will tell
the story of Mister Pussy, a long haired domestic cat who recently had Tom to
help him leave this world in as peaceful and dignified a manner as possible.
I am 33 years old, Mr. Pussy was 28.
He was originally my mother's next door neighbour's cat but decided of his own
volition that life was better with us. When
my mother passed away 4 and a half years ago, I took Mr. Pussy to live with me.
He was already very old, but was healthy.
Unfortunately, as the years passed, Mr. Pussy developed chronic stomatitis in
his gums. He also began to pass bloood in his urine intermittently, which
thankfully caused him no pain. Tom suspected cancer but rightly felt that at
Mr. Pussy's advanced age, it would be far too stressful to pursue any
aggressive treatment or tests. As for the stomatitis, it flared up from time to
time causing him great pain and an inability to eat, but each time Tom managed
to treat him successfully. He was (again rightly) reluctant to take the drastic
measure of pulling all of Mr. Pussy's teeth, as experience had shown him it did
not always work.
Eventually age caught up with Mr. Pussy - he suffered multiple seizures towards
the end, lost weight and his mouth became worse. Tom gave him one last dose of
Thiamin and anti-biotics, to no avail. He developed an abcess despite all of
this. At 28 years old, he could fight no longer, despite having the very best
of care.
I rang Tom in distress, and he arranged for me to bring My friend of 28 years
in just after all the other clients had left for the day. He examined Mr. Pussy
one last time, and, knowing that I was ready to do whatever was best for the
cat, he quickly gave him his final injection.
At the time, I didn't see it coming - the actual injection happened so fast,
and my cat's body relaxed in my arms instantly. In hindsight, I realise that
Tom, knowing how I feel about animals, particularly my intimate non-human
friends, did the deed so quickly so that I would not become hysterical.
Kindness to me? Perhaps, but more importantly, his swift action was a final act
of kindness to Mr. Pussy, as had I had time to react, he would have become
distressed.
As it was, he slipped as
peacefully into the afterlife as possible given the circumstances. This to me
is proof of what an amazing vet Tom is. He knows that animals know when the end
is coming. And he knows that animals will become upset if their human does. He
goes way beyond the call of duty to ensure that animals do not suffer unduly.
He is a "true" vet
- and believe me I have come across many that think very little of the animals
who rely on them for healthcare and compassion. I do not know if there is an
oath that vet's have to take before being allowed to practice, but there ought
to be, and Tom Rennick should compose it!
I have also nominated
I was still crying for Mr.
Pussy, but she kept my mind occupied with chatter and laughter and stories
about various animals that had come in, provided tissues, and was generally
fantastic, all while she continued her work. Far from the snooty, stony-faced
stereotypical image of a receptionist,
This anecdote is one of many I could tell to show my experiences with Tom and

Reason for Nomination:
I have two Shiz Tzu both female.
The older dog, Sasha, has had a terrible year, with pancreas infections,
eye operations and she is diabetic.
The help and support I received at All Care Veterinary Centre is
unbelievable. Both the vets Danny and
Gary have gone above and beyond the call of duty for my dogs.
This year their manner was marvellous with the dogs and me as a frantic
owner.
My Sasha is now stable
diabetic. She also has glaucoma but is
as happy as a pup and full of energy now.
The whole veterinary team in All Care is exceptional, excellent,
friendly, informative, caring and each and every one of them deserve an award
for the work they do.
They are phenomenal people to have working in animal care and should be
recognised for it. Danny and Gary are
vets always on call. Fenika and Theresa,
veterinary nurses, exceptional manners.
Without services like that provided by All Care Centre my house and
indeed many others woudn’t function without my happy healthy Shiz Tzus.
Thanks you.

Team nomination – contact Team,

Vet nomination – contact
Vet Nurse/other nomination- contact
Reason for Nomination:
I would like to nominate the veterinary team of Animal’s First
Veterinary Hospital, Kilcullen, Co Kildare for the Veterinary Pet Care Awards
2008/
It is to thank the vets Rachael Gordon and Conor McMahon and the nurses
Shelley, Susan and Jane for the consistently high level of care, kindness and
friendliness that they have shown to our dogs and to us over the past few years.
Animals First Veterinary Hospital was set up by Rachael and Conor, both
brilliant vets, who are loved by our adopted greyhounds and deerhound and who
also have excellent people skills as I am aware that a good percentage of our
vets’ time, care and patience is spent on pet’s owners !. Our greyhounds have been looked after by
Rachael since we adopted them from the Dog Rescue
Both Amber and Angel had serious intestinal problems and Rachael’s
patience in dealing with two sick, previously ill treated, nervous dogs and
their worried owners was incredible.
Both are still regularly monitored and are on a special diet. Angel also
has cardiomyopathy and calcification of her vertebrae but is in great form
thanks to her medication and regular check ups.
I am very impressed with the use of complementary therapies and
mainsteam medicine in the practice.
Rachael has also made house visits out of hours to deal with worrying
incidents concerning the dogs. It is her
patience, her giving of her time and her constant good humour that make her
stand out.
We have had many a good laugh over the years about our four dogs, a good
sign as most of the time, apart from meeting at various animal charity events,
they only see the vet when they are ill although we do get frequent reminders
in the post to visit for flea and worming treatments, dental check ups and
vaccinations. Our dogs actually like going to the vet !
Conor, too, is extremely patient and takes time to explain any
treatments in detail. I know from my own
experience that the practice helps with abandoned dogs and cats and takes care
of, or forwards to the relevant agency, injured wildlife. They also help local animal charities and do
all of this without counting the cost of time or finance. Also when both of our “boys”, Setanta
(deerhound) and Finn (Greyhound) were adopted, Rachael gave them a grooming
session as a present when they went for their first check up.
Recently we had a great
sadness when Finn (10 year old greyhound) died of bone cancer but I cannot
praise Rachael, Conor and the practice nurses enough for the care they gave him over the year and
a half since which we had adopted him.
He had had a very hard life before he went to the animal sanctuary in
Our gentle giant (he was an extremely large greyhound) had his own
“private” corner of the surgery as he recovered from the operation to try to
control the cancer. For two weeks
during, before and after surgery hours, they made me feel welcome. I was with Finn in the surgery three times a
day for over an hour at a time.
He was placed near their computer and work area so he had plenty of
stimulation but also quiet times to sleep.
While he couldn’t be moved without being aided, his eyes followed them
everywhere. I never once felt in the way
as they carried on their surgery around me.
They took almost as much care of me as they did of Finn ! They washed and tumble dried his “selection”
of cushions and the soft toys on which he liked to rest his head. They spent a lot of time with me and in their
own time devising “menus” that would encourage him to eat. He had his own supplies on part of a shelf in
the fridge !
I can honestly say that it seemed as if they loved and cared for him as
much as we did.
We were constantly told to ring anytime of the day or night, even during
the night when Finn came home to spend what were to be his last three days with
us. Their sadness when he died appeared
to match our own.
No matter how busy they are, Rachael and Conor patiently give their time
either on the phone or in person, one never feels rushed by them. They listen.
Our three dogs need ongoing treatment for life and Rachael and Conor
keep us up to date on any new medication and treatments and if necessary will
refer the dogs to a specialist or on the other hand will reduce medication at
any signs of improvement.
Nothing appears to be too much trouble for them. I often joke with them, that if I ever was
unfortunate enough to have a serious medical condition, that I’d like to be
able to be treated at the vets !

were on holidays, Bella suffered a very massive heart attack in the kennels on
We immediately came back from
holiday and contacted Animal First and they told us to drop down straightaway
even though it was a Sunday morning. When we arrived we met Conor and at that
stage he had already stabilised Bella even though she was critically ill. Conor
spoke with us and outlined the position the with regards to Bella's prognosis
and he did this in such a human way that he help us both deal with the
situation.
Over the next week Conor and
Rachael did absolutely everything that could be done (Xrays, blood test, ECG
and ultrasounds)and they nursed Bella back to health. It is now 16 months since
this occurred and Bella has had numerous setbacks and these mostly occur late
at night or over weekends. Every time this has ocurred we ring Animal First and
they always answer immeditely and tell us to bring Bella straight down, even
though we only live 10 mins from the practise either Rachael or Conor are
always there waiting for us.
They do everthing to
stabilise Bella and take her in and look after her. The experience we have had
with Animal First with Bella has resulted in us moving Rusty from our previous
Vets. They diagnosed Rusty on his first visit with a heart murmur and put him
on treatments that has resulted in him being like a 10 year collie rather than
a 17 year old dog. …..

has become more important than ever.
Only when you see this care in action do you feel as an animal lover,
your faith restored knowing that there are still many people to whom the care
of animals is of the utmost importance.
In the almost thirty years that my family’s pets have been in the care
of Jim and his team we have always had the utmost admiration and respect for
the caring attention they have shown to our pets (and us).
When you love your pets as
much as my family does, nothing is more important than to find a vet who will
show the sensitivity you feel your pets deserve and who realises what a
responsibility it is to reward the utmost care and trust these helpless animals place in you. Where Jim and his team are concerned we have
never had any doubt that the care of our pets is as important to them as it is
to us and that is more rewarding to us than words can say.
We know that if our dogs could talk they would say thank you better than
we possibly could for the care and sensitivity they have been shown over the
years and we knew they look forward to many more years of loving attention they
have enjoyed.
For ourselves, the knowledge that our pets have the best possible care
is worth more than words can say.

I came home from town and found

Reason for Nomination:
If ever there was a practise
in it for the animals and not the money then Moss is it!
Having dealt with many vets
in my time I can say that the team at Moss are a joy to work with. I volunteer
for a rescue group which take dogs from the pound, neuter/vaccinate/healthcheck
them before securing rescue spaces/homes for them. Moss are the vets which help
us to do this.
The Moss experience starts as
soon as you walk through the door, there's always a smile and a kind word for
the dog I've brought from the receptionists. The vet nurses are in a league of
their own.
I've brought in dogs who were so scared that they
wouldn't walk and had to be carried and after 2 days in Moss they've trotted
back out happy and relaxed and I know it's all down to the fantastic hands on
care all the nurses at Moss provide.
They are always very friendly, happy to help and go out of their way to
accomodate our dogs. Then there's the vets, all animal mad! Great for advice,
they really look after both us the customer and the dogs fantastically well. They're
always quick to update us on a situation and we always feel like we know
exactly what is happening with our dogs.
They have also held dogs
there for us for a few hours to enable us to sort out transport and I've also
called there after hours and found them just as willing and eager to help me. I
wouldn’t have no hesitation in recommmending this practice to anyone, they are
a dream.
You might have noticed from
my address that I live about 45mins way from the surgery but I have found the
Moss team to be so good that I now drive 30 extra miles so that my own 2 dogs
can avail of their excellent care.

I would like to nominate my veterinary team for the care,

Our family had a jack Russell
called Jenny as a family pet for over 15 years. Poor Jenny had an unfortunate visit to
Abbeyside in 2006.
Our other jealous family pet,
german shepherd Meg, attacked Jenny when they brought over food. Jenny was basically left with her head hanging
off.
We phoned Abbeyside straight away and Pat Carroll met us out of hours at
the surgery. He saved her life. All the hair around her neck had to be shaved
off prior to surgery so she looked like Frenkenstein’s dog !!
The staff were so nice to her and us.
It is no surprise then, that when I moved to Cashel from Kilkenny and
bought a jack Russell, Ruby, I still attend the Abbeyside Veterinary, because I
find them excellent all round. Therefore
its worth clocking up over 160 km on a round trip from Cashel, Co

When I’m getting someone’s dog spayed/ neutered I never have to worry
about the paperwork being done wrong on behalf of the person, Ann Marie ensures
that all paperwork is done correctly. I
couldn’t continue without the help of Ann Marie as she will always fit in an
emergency case for me for spaying/neutering.
She is always at the end of the phone to answer any questions I have; if
she can’t answer, she’ll ask one of the nurses.
If I call her up with a cruelty case, she will do all in her power to
ensure the dog is seen as soon as possible. Her help is invaluable.
Sometimes if a case is very bad and a dog has to be put to sleep, she is
very understanding and consoles me in every way possible. She accepts that it’s a hard decision to make
but never judges or berates me for being upset.
She has become a friend over the years.
She often takes pups home to
foster when there was no space available for them anywhere else. She is a treasure. When my own dog was sick with pancreatitis,
Ann Marie was brilliant because she kept me up to date with what was going on and she was great
because I had insurance and she helped me to fill in all the forms and made
sure I got any money owed to me back.
Ann Marie makes what can be a very difficult job at times, a lot easier

Vet nomination – contact Ann Marie Horgan and Vibeke Fosse
Reason for Nomination:
Fantastic, caring, understanding, patient , these are all words that
describe the team at All Pets, but words are not really enough in this case
without telling you a bit more of our “Jessie’s story” over the last 10 months.
Jessie has always been a well dog only visiting the vets for her
vaccinations and the odd bump and scrape.
This was all to change last November.
She collapsed on a Saturday morning.
We rang All Pets, bring her up straight away, by the time we got her
there she was back to her normal bouncy self.
They gave her a full check up and suggested we get her spayed as we
didn’t want puppies and we had noticed 2 or 3 small lumps so they said they
would do needle aspirate biopsies at the same time.
The call came 10 days later, intermedia mast cell tumours, they would
have to be removed immediately. 7 lumps,
stitches all over and so the battle began.
We nursed her up and down to the vets. The stiches came out on Christmas
Eve. The lumps came back with avengence
in different places, ears, legs, tummy, everywhere – back we went and 12 more
were removed. She went in on Valentine’s
Day so many stitches, so many stitches, what had we done we managed to get her
home and eventually into the house. We
took it in turns to sit with her feeding her by hand.
One of the wounds on her tummy wouldn’t heal. They put in a drain, daily visits to the vets
to check it and clean the wounds, the stitches came out and we crossed our
fingers. We had 2 good weeks and then
she got sick again – vomiting and diarrhoea, it was a Monday night. No problem, meet you in 20 minutes,
pancreatitis !
One bout after another, the girls gave us their personal mobile numbers,
call us anytime “day or night”. If she starts an attack Sundays and bank
holidays were always the times but it was never a problem for them. We tried every type of food to see if we
could control them. They rang dieticians for advice.
Jessie was losing weight
rapidly and we were struggling to cope with the emotional strain of watching
our beautiful girl wasting away, in pain and constanly on drips and anti
biotics. She had a terrible attack,
where to go from here, were we at the end of the road, was she suffering, were
we being cruel ?
We didn’t know what to do, had the cancer spread ? The girls re-assured us UCD had been in
contact with them, they will see her straight away, they can do an ultra sound
and more tests so we can find out what is going on and make a decision on what
is best.
We drove to
They would have to do an exploratory operation to get proper samples, it
was dangerous but the only way forward.
She spent a week in UCD and they let us bring her home.
45 staples down her tummy, the girls checked her every few days. I cooked chicken breast and rice everyday,
she was able to feed small amounts every few hours and we then tried RD dry
food, it seemed to work.
No treats, nothing but her own food, pills, so many for her to take, we
waited for the biopsy results. “It’s not
cancer”, they couldn’t believe it, we would do another ultrasound in 4 weeks. The mass was still there, no bigger, no
smaller, we pushed the antibiotics. Two
days later another attack, I can tell now before they happen. A Saturday, Ann Marie was meant to be going
to a wedding, no problem to bring her up, all afternoon in the vets on a drip,
your wedding is fine I’ll go to the afters if Jessie is OK of course.
Jessie rallied. She went a week
without being sick and then another. We
were quietly optimistic. She had
another fit, only small, back we went and yes, it was a Saturday night ! It was the May Bank Holiday. The vets had told us who was on call over the
weekend in advance. Jessie was pottering
in the garden, she had a huge seizure, it was the most frightening thing I had
ever seen. We rang, be there in 20 minutes.
Jessie was fine by the time we got to the vets. Another afternoon, blood tests and talking
aobut what to do next. MRI Scan ?
UCD were consulted. Try her on
phobarbitine (spelling..?) for a few
weeks. It might start the pancreatitis
up again but let’s try. Jessie has been
taking it now for 3 months, no major seizures.
The pancreatitis only one bout 3 weeks ago in the middle of the night,
but the girls were there in 20 minutes as always. More lumps have appeared but the biopsies so
far have come back negative.
Jessie goes for a check up now every 4 weeks, for safety’s sake and they
like to see her. I think they miss her
to be honest. Not once in this long haul
have they given up on her or us.
Our pet insurance ran out in February, our savings have dwindled, our
bills mounted up. We worried and fretted
“pay what you can when you can”. It’s
not about the money, it’s about getting Jessie well.
And Jessie what about her, she has scars everywhere but still bounds
into All Pets everytime, no matter whether she is sick or well, is back to
enjoying her walks and looks like nothing has ever been wrong with her,
although she is not too keen on her food but eats it anyway.
We cannot thank All Pets enough for everything they have done when we
were ready to give up. They encouraged
us to keep going, smiles and hugs as well as tears and despair, but through the
good and the bad times always available 24/7.
Nobody gives more than these fantastic team of vets and vet nurses, so
many friends have said she is only a dog.
Not to us, a best friend, companion, never complains and always a wag of
a tail for everyone. One in a million,
just like our vets.
We want them to be honoured and thanked in a special way as the thank
you cards and chocolates just do not seem to be enough to acknowledge such
wonderful dedication, affection and understanding. If the world had more people like these in it
what a wonderful place it would be !
I apologise for the longness of this, but I had to give you the full
story. I did think I could say it all in one word, but just could not find one
that was right even after looking through a dictionary for a few hours.
I think the Awards are a great idea and it is fantastic that these
wonderful people do get the recognition that they so deserve. -- End of Entry --

semi-feral lurcher to frightened young greyhound left in the pounds to be put
to sleep to an over-confident 90-pound hooligan, I know, I always know, that
all will be well: the semi-feral lurcher came out a little bit less wild (the
staff thought she was "sweet"); the frightened dog a little less shy,
and the hooligan being a bit more careful about his shenanigans.
Every single dog I have brought to them has been handled with skill by the
staff prior to surgery, and I know this because I watch how they handle each
dog as it is taken from me. Sometimes a very frightened dog is picked up by one
of the vets; the shy ones are always coaxed; and the over-friendly ones are not
allowed to pull the staff around. The staff is always friendly, informative,
cooperative, and the vets are always willing to give me some minutes to ask
questions and voice some concerns. They have on more than one occasion
initiated contact with specialists in
When I return at the end of the day to pick up the dog or dogs who've had
surgery, they are happy, clean, awake and alert, and any abnormalities which
the vet has encountered during surgery are explained to me.
Most important of all for me is that the surgical skill all the Brittas vets
have demonstrated is well above average: not once have I had post-surgical
complications or even minor problems. This is so much the case that I have not
had any need to use those plastic collars (lampshades), and the dogs don't even
seem to realise anything was done to them. I have a very hard time keeping them
quiet for the next few days, even as soon as the following morning in most
cases. I can only assume they make an effort to be as non-invasive as possible,
and use just the right combination of medications.
Oh, wait! I DID have a complaint just two weeks ago: two males were neutered,
and I had arranged a nice quiet sleeping area for them, well aware they would
be unable to keep food down, and would likely not be hungry anyway.
This was wrong. They left Brittas like two dogs who'd had a nice long nap and
were anxious to use up a little energy now! Once home, they were RAVENOUS and I
watched in amazement as they ate readily and even kept it down.
I don't know EXACTLY what Brittas is doing to have such results, but whatever it
is, I hope they don't stop!

Reason for Nomination:
......Jim Fuller has been a
reliable, cheerful vet for my own dogs as well as all the greyhounds at my
sanctuary for several years now, but he recently went so far above and beyond
the call of duty, it brings tears to my eyes just to think about it.
……………..Jim treats both large and small animals. He is a very busy person, but
is always positive in outlook and quick to reply to my messages, no matter how
often I contact him. He must think I am a terrible pest, but if he does, he
hides it well. Jim often has calls to do in my immediate area, so he often
treats my adoption greyhounds here at home in terms of injections, stitching,
and more. He's the sort of vet the dogs flock to the gate to greet, and he
seems to love them as much as they love him.
Recently one of my own personal dogs, a white greyhound named Maeve, suddenly
went downhill in the course of a day. She was a model greyhound, and I took her
everywhere with me to promote greyhounds as pets. Everyone was struck by her
beauty, her intelligence, her gentle manner, and some people even said she was
"almost human". Indeed she was.
…..The result from the ultrasound was very clear: there was a large tumour on
her adrenal gland, pressing on several organs, but especially on her aorta,
which was probably about to burst. It was clear the tumour was not treatable,
and Maeve would need to be put to sleep right away. She was given some strong
painkiller, and I brought her home to have her put to sleep and buried here on
my property. Jim, without a doubt, would have to be the one to put this gentle
lady to sleep. That night, a farmer neighbour dug a grave for her at the back
of the property.
When Jim arrived the next day, difficult as it was for her, Maeve made sure she
got up and greeted him at the gate, her tail wagging, despite her pain. She
cuddled with him when he came inside and we sat down to talk about it all, and
he told me then he had in fact phoned two other vets that morning to see if
there were any possible ways to extend her life a bit. But there was not. I in
fact had phoned two other vets myself.
We decided to put her to sleep outside, near the grave. I brought a duvet cover
from my bed, and myself, Jim and Maeve began to walk in that direction. Maeve,
however, was anxious to come with us but was clearly struggling with even
walking now. Jim turned and scooped her
up in his arms, carried her the rest of the way, and gently set her down on the
duvet cover I had spread out. She quickly laid down on it, and we both stroked
her as she was relieved of her suffering and quietly drifted off to her forever
sleep.
I wrapped the cover around her, silently crying, and Jim lifted her up and
carried her into the grave, and gently set her down. I placed some flowers on top of her, and Jim took a spade and covered
her over. I was very touched by his actions.
I don't know what made me cry more - my constant companion finally having to
leave me, her great effort to get up and greet Jim when he arrived, or the
sight of Jim being so tender and caring, and a little choked up himself, during
his visit.
The fact is that there are at least a dozen other stories I could tell you
about Jim and my own dogs, or Jim and my adoption dogs, but his compassion and
efforts in this particular instance were, to me, so moving, that I had to find
a way to at least try to have him acknowledged as the sort of outstanding and
compassionate vet he truly is.

My vet and veterinary team are excellent. 24 hour service. Someone always available for telephone

Johanna Tambute Power has treated very many of our dogs with good
results. She is very thorough and good at diagnosis of conditions and is kind
and caring with the dogs. Also the sense
of humour – much needed with our lot !
I witnessed her kindness when
I saw her with a couple with a young child. It appeared that their dog had a badly
injured paw. She had photographed, with her mobile phone, what had happened and how
she had fixed it and was re-assured the child that her pet would not be in pain

The practice has good facilities so diagnosis is swift. We are very pleased with the service we

Reason for Nomination:
The entire practice is professional, caring and will do their very best
to solve the problem. Whenever I have
had to call out of hours the vet on duty (whatever the hour) is always
pleasant, asks questions, gives an informative response and have always said if
I have any more questions not to hesitate to call back. They would also be willing to meet me at the
clinic if I thought it necessary.
I recently had a traumatic (for me) visit when I found out my dog had a
large growth on his spleen. Because he
has a heart condition, I was extremely worried about an operation and was
considering not going through with it.
The vet (Charles Chavasse) explained and pros and cons and after having
an ultra scan and an ECG and another consultation with the vet, I decided to put my trust in him and go through with
it. I did remain in the car park during
the surgery and knowing how worried I was as soon as it was over, the nurse
(Sonia) came out and told me all went well and that Charles would be out to see
me as soon as he finished the stitching, which he did and it really put my mind
at ease.
After surgery at home I became a bit concerned and called the vet on
duty that evening. It was Johanna
Tambute and she was familiar with the case and she said she would come out to
my home (a distance of 15 miles) and check him out.
She gave him an injection and told me to call again if I was
concerned. Thank God there wasn’t any
further problem and she is well again.
Any time I have had to visit the clinci, whether I see Charles, Johanna,
or Jim Byrne, I have always received excellent treatment. There is no rush and all questions are
answered. Other clients I have spoken to
have all said the same thing.
The receptionist (Ann) and the other office staff are always pleasant
and willing to help in any way. This

Reason for Nomination:
I am registered with the Deise Veterinary Group in Dungarvan, Co
I find myself continually in awe and admiration of her many skills as a
vet. I have been attending her practice
since she came to
To illustrate my point, one of my
older dogs, Honey, who was 17 years old, had to be put to sleep after she went
into heart failure. I can’t
emphasise enough how gentle and caring she dealt with the dog and
ourselves. Obviously we were loath to
part with our little dog, but she gently and firmly lead us to consider only
the dog and make the right decision in the animals’ best interest.
A few weeks later my next door neighbour’s German Shepherd dog who had
been ill also needed her assistance to be put to sleep. The
owner is a very elderly man who is quite ill himself, I was present with him
when she came and quietly confidently and with great understanding for this ill
man, did what was necessary and lifted the dog out, placing it in her jeep to
go for cremation. She made
everything so dignified and with great consideration for the feelings of this man. It seems to me she has the ability to
administer to both animals and humans and yet it is clear that all that’s done
is directed towards the welfare of the animals under her care.
Judy, my 14 year old timid cat, has been attending Johnna with an inoperative
face tumour still in its early stages.
Judy is normally very much afraid of strange people and places and tends
to bolt into the blue at the sight of both.
To my astonishment she sat in front of Johnna, gazing up into her eyes
while Johanna patted her. I was gob
smacked to see how quickly she had gained the cat’s confidence literally in a
matter of a few minutes and appeared to have a mutual relationship with the cat
on a par with my own.
I could go on and on about various incidents where both my animals and I
have been happier after a consultation with her. With all my animals she has exhibited concern
for good health care for them all, trying out the latest and best of medication
to enable them to lead a healthier happier life.
I therefore most enthusiastically
nominate Johanna Tambute Power for this award as I believe it would be
difficult to surpass her dedication, professionalism, compassion, and pleasant
manner in dealing with her patients. I
am convinced as I sing her praises that she would be a most worthy recipient
and a fine example of veterinary practice who deserves recognition and reward
for her many veterinary skills.
I have no hesitation therefore in recommending Johanna Tambute Power for
this award, she is an entirely dedicated veterinary practitioner and a credit
to her profession. And I really hope she qualifies for this

Reason for Nomination:
Following are my reasons. Not
sure if I have the names of the medicines right, but you will know:-
Cheeky my tortoiseshell cat walked into my house and into my life 5
years ago. She stayed and made herself
at home. I found that she belonged to a
nearby farmer and kept returning her to them, she had other ideas and kept
returning to the comfort of my home. In
the end the farmer told me to keep her as she obviously was happy with me, he
thought she must be 10 years or older as she had belonged to an Aunt who had
gone off to
Cheeky was a very affectionate cat, loved to rub noses and was happiest
when curled upon my knee or around my neck, with a very loud purr. A great ratter and the pygmy shrews had a
hard time. She also brough home young
rabbits and a dead stoat. She would
bring live mice into the house and walk off, leaving me to rescue them. The rats were another matter. One summer on four consecutive days she came
down the drive with a squeeling large rat in her mouth and dropped it for me to
inspect while she tormented it. The
squeels brought Maggie my yorkshire terrier running who suddenly discovered her
vocation, grabbed the rat and with three shakes finished it off. When I went out Cheeky was always waiting for
my return on the doorstep, if not there I would call her and her answering
miaow could be heard across the fields as she rushed back.
When I went away, she had access to a flat with her bedding and my
friend fed her daily with a bit of loving, so it meant she stayed on her own
turf. She would also visit the farm as
they always knew when I was away.
Latterly due to my friend now working away from Wexford, Cheeky was put
into a rather salubrious cattery specially build for the purpose. She did not approve and I was shown this
disapproval in her purring, first day home, no purring then a very quiet purr
gradually ascending to her loud purr.
Every year both Cheeky and Maggie are taken for their yearly check up
and vaccinations (neither until last year had been sick) they are regularly
given flea and worming treatment.
Last Christmas I went to
I kept in contact by phone and spoke to both Richard and Brian
regularly. I asked if they thought I should return home immediately, but was
informed there was nothing that I could do that was not already being
done. She had developed ulcers all in
her mouth and down her throat and Cheeky who always had a great appetite could
not eat so was being tube fed, also tempted down with Salmon and other
delicacies.
Cheeky was tested for Feline Aids and the results showed a partial
positive, another was taken and sent to
I returned home and went in to see Cheeky on 18th January at
I stayed there for one and a half hours with Cheeky on my knee. Then home and to come back the next day. The next day Richard suggested I take her
home, they had removed her feeding tube as it was irritating her, so I was
given tins of special food and a syringe to feed her with every three hours.
It was difficult. I had to wrap
her up in a towel, otherwise she would claw me, but we managed and I hoped she
was getting enough food to sustain her.
Drinking was another thing, she couldn’t drink milk and water was also
difficult. I was always so delighted
when she drank water but when she didn’t I gave her that by syringe as well.
Cheeky had never had a litter tray, always letting me know when she
wanted to go out, so was not in the last bit amused when I produced one, she
kept hoping I would let her out. At
first she had twice weekly injections.
On 24th January Richard asked if Cheeky was eating yet and as
she was not he decided to give her a shot of diazapan.
I was to rush home and feed her, which I did, I have her a favourite of
hers steak mince, she rushed at it then backed off, she did however drink 2
large saucers of milk , nothing more.
One 25th January I was back to see Richard at 8.30am, we had
discussed treatment for her ulcers and as I have the odd mouth ulcer (a family
trait) the doctor gives me Orabase which Richard found was a steroid, so he
gave her an injection, also one and a half ccs of medicine I had to give her 3
times a day, plus eye drops. She was
then to have her second lot of interferon 5 times the following week, so I was
to go in daily.
He offered to have her in for those days but I thought she would be
happier at home. On Monday 28th
Janaury I was to take Cheeky to get her injection. It was a lovely day and Cheeky did a bunk to
inspect her property. I called and
called and then went looking for her after I had rung Richard to inform him I
couldn’t find her. I asked him if he thought she had taken herself off to die
somewhere, he said he thought it was very unlikely and to come in when she
returned, which she did 3 hours later, so I took her in then.
By 31st January Cheeky had stopped sniffling and her lungs
were clear. Ever since she came home she
had slept with me putting her paws over my neck then her body followed, purring
for about an hour then falling asleep when I would move her to the side of me
covered, I would awake with every sniffle or cough and stroke her.
The 1st February was a sunny day, so took Cheeky tucked
inside my coat for a walk with Maggie, it was cold but she appeared to enjoy
it.
On the 2nd February she had finished her interferon
injections and it was Saturday. Richard
gave Cheeky a long lasting antibiotic to last the weekend. She was getting weaker by the day and not drinking
or eating except that which I gave her by the syringe. Richard was always kind and considerate, he
thought Cheeky was a great cat and she was always happy to see him.
On Sunday I awoke to find Cheeky in a sad state. The pupil of one eye was completely dilated
and when I put my finger towards her there was no reaction, so I knew she was
blind. I rang Richard who siad he would
do a blood test the next day. My friend came and took Maggie home with her and
arranged for another friend who loves cats to come to the vets with me the next
day as I realised there was nothing else to be done.
Spent all day holding her, she
was no longer purring. The next day
Cheeky purred and she lay on the bed with the electric blanket on and the sun
shining through the window so she lay on her back with the sun warm on her
tummy. I went outside and chose one of
her favourite sites and dug her grave awash with tears.
At three I went with Cheeky to see Richard. I sat with her in my arms, then they took her
for the blood test which took some time as it was difficult. When she came back she clung to me. My friend arrived. I was delighted to see her as needing
support.
Richard came back after about quarter of an hour. One look at his face
told me before he said that it was not good, they had trouble in getting her
blood and all her organs were shutting down and there was nothing further he
could do. He had tried so hard and for
so long. Would I like to put her to
sleep.
I said yes please would he do it now.
So we went into his surgery and lay Cheeky on her blanket on the
table. Richard told me to stroke her
head and talk to her, while he gave her the injection. She just slipped gently asleep, not a twitch,
not anything, it was so peaceful. My
friend and I were both in tears and Richard wrapped her gently in her blanket
and carried her out to my car.
Later Richard wrote me a very understanding letter saying how sorry he
was that we had to put Cheeky to sleep, and that I couldn’t have done more for
her. This helped me a great deal.
I am sure that Cheeky was looked after by all the staff at the practice
for which I am extremely grateful.
Richard also spent time on the internet and speaking to veterinary
friends around the world seeing if he could help Cheeky.

Reason for Nomination:
Hello. My name is Bud. My owner didn’t really want me to write this as
she doesn’t want to be seen as one of those obsessive types. Well I never listened to her before and I
don’t plan on listening to her now.
I’m a nine year old beautiful white west highland terrier (if I say so
myself) every vets dream. My owner
rescued me from
A few months later I decided that it was time to see herself again (well
I couldn’t have her forgetting about me now could I ). I had, had a small stroke. Annette picked up
on this straight away ran some bloods, sent me home on yummie tablets. Well the tablets are yummie inside a slice of
meat as I refused to take them any other way.
Now I have been living in Wexford over three years now and it was the
best move I ever made. However at the
time of writing this I was not a well puppy. I visited Annette late one Friday night in
complete pain. I’m lucky I have an
observant owner as she noticed I was very down in myself. Annete noticed my lack of form as I wasn’t
trying to attack her as I normally do.
Now she ran more bloods which showed that I had some liver and kidney
problems and to top it all of a thyroid problem (more tablets). It was decided then that I would get a scan
from the radiologist just to see what was going on in there. With the exception of pancreatitis she found
that I had a tumour on my liver. This
was a major shock to everyone even Annette as I saw a tear in her eye. But I was still in great form and I even had
another scan done at a later stage and the tumour had not grown. Because of my age, my owner decided against
operating as the risks were too high.
However (there is always a however) around Christmas I started feeling
unwell again. My tumour had started to
bleed and it was only time before I would be visiting Doggy Heaven. I pulled through a few times and managed to
spend my last Christmas with my family.
My owner had to make that decision that is the worst decision anyone
ever has to make. Because I was so bad
and in such pain and because the tumour was bleeding she decided for my benefit
I had to be put to sleep in case the whole tumour ruptured. I now have pride of place in the front garden
where I had spent a lot of time anyway and my owner comes to visit me nearly
every day. I know I was a lucky dog to
get a second chance and I know I will never to forgotten.
BUD.
Not a day goes by when I don’t
think of my little Bud. I miss him like
crazy. I still look for him to greet me
when I return from college. It was the
hardest decision that I ever had to make in my whole life.
Only for Annette and all her
help and advice I don’t think that I would have got through it. She is the most amazing person humans and
animals could meet. No matter what time
of day or night she was needed she was readily available. She is one of a kind and loves animals in the
same way.
No other vet I have met in my life would match her. I feel she is more
deserving of the award than ever before for her dedication to me and my little
Bud. As for the rest of the staff,
Caroline, Ailish, Marie, Emma and Stephanie, there really woudn’t be a Pet vet
without them.
They are a brilliant group of people and they are so dedicated to their
work, just as much as Annette.

Reason for Nomination:
Annette is superb. I have full
confidence in her skills. However I have
let Bonny speak (Bark ) ! for herself.
Enclosing her letter. Sr
Anne.
Hi Folks,
Bonny here, an ageing Pom, but thanks to Annette and her team am not bad
looking for my age. Indeed I often hear
remarks on how gorgeous I look especially after a visit to “Pet Vet” where Emma
dolls me up with a shampoo and grooming.
And the pedicure is the last word.
Its like padding on air when she is finished.
Last January I had major surgery.
I could feel this lump. Nothing
much at first but Annette spotted it.
Mind you she did nothing for a while but then one day she said it would
have to be removed. I sensed the
solumnity of the announcment and her concern.
There were great preparations made.
Special medication, diet and lots of attention. The day arrived and I knew it was special. All my friends kept patting me and wishing me
well. I had no fears. I am never afraid of Annette.
I heard them say when I was a youngster that I was the best dog in town
and that I never give trouble. So I live
up to my reputation. Anyhow it all went very well. I was handled so carefully and the “after
care” was great. They had special
cushions and beds for me so I wouldn’t have to climb the stairs. But I just flew up to my room to the
amazement of everyone. Couldn’t see what
the fuss was about.
However coming down was another story.
Poor Sr Anne had to carry me and she was so afraid of hurting me. In the end we came down on the stair lift
which was a great idea. Sr. Anne is the
person who looks after my needs but all the Sisters love me and take me for
walks. And I take care of them. I would not let anyone harm them.
I have just had a visit to Pet Vet and met all the gang. They told me I was in smashing form. My teeth were singled out for special
mention. Seemingly I am in far better
shape than many a younger dog and as you can see, my coat is terrific.
So its all thanks to Annette and her dream team of Caroline, Ailish,
Emma, Ciara, Jacinta and of course the lovely lady at the desk Stephanie. So I hope they get the Award they deserve.
I will be seeing them soon as Annette has a little job to do – removing
a growth on my eyelid, but as usual I am being well prepared for the
procedure. So it looks like there is a
brighter future ahead !

Address of Practise/Surgery:
Practise/Surgery Telephone:053916523
Reason for Nomination:
Each time I attend this
practice, whether it be by appointment or on spec (as has occurred on
occasions) both myself and my pet have
been treated to exceptionally high standards, from the friendly chit chat
to the most professional medical treatment received by my pet. I have
nominated this practice as it operates above and beyond the limit of a
veterinary service and seem to maintain this level of care with a smiling face,
something which is all too absent in today's society.
Eventhough I am nominating the practice as a whole as it is clearly a team
effort in Pet Vet, Kerlogue Business Park, Wexford, I would like to acknowledge
the efforts of one person in particular, Ms. Ailish Furlong, who is a
fantastic person who carries out her work with the utmost conscienciousness,
devotion and love for those she cares for.
I'm nominating this practice as a thank you for all their hard work and
graciousness throughout the past 2.5 years, they truly deserve it.

Reason for Nomination:To whom it concerns,
I have 5 cats and one dog and they are my
pride and joy. I love them with all my heart. When they are unwell it means the
world to me to know that they will get the best possible care from my
chosen veterinary team, Pet Vet.
Nowhere in this country, or
any other for that matter, will you find better people to look after your pets
than here. It starts with the genuine care and compassion you meet at the desk
going in and follows through to the most knowledgeable and caring vets I have
ever met. They also have amazing high tech facilities that allow them to make a
diagnosis very quickly and accurately.
I have just lost one of my cats. His name was Socks. He was 12 years old and I
absolutely loved him with all my heart. He had been unwell for a while.. he had
contracted the FYV virus. For those of us who love our pets just like we love
any member of our family, we know how painful it is to lose them and we know
that anything that can help at the time means so much. That's how it was for me
during Socks' final moments. He was lying on my knee and I had a feeling that
the end was near.
I started to panic as I
thought maybe I should bring him to Annette in case he was suffering . So I
phoned Pet Vet and spoke to Annette. I decided to bring him down to her but he
slipped away just after I put the phone down. I phoned back to let them know
that I wouldn't be bringing him down after all. My heart felt like it was going
to split open after he was gone and while I knew there was nothing more she
could do I just felt better having made contact with Annette and her team.
When you are going
through that and a simple conversation on the phone and a text from your vet is
able to help you then let me say there is no price that you can put on that.
Earlier this year my little cat called Emily got a very deep and dangerous cut
on her back right leg. This was very serious as she had lost her front left leg
as a kitten. I found her about
There was a chance she would
lose the little leg. I was sick with worry as I didn't know how the little pet
would cope with two legs or if she would be able to cope at all. At around
Straight away I felt better
knowing Annette was watching over her. Then when I woke around
They brought her to the
Wexford surgery where Caroline carried out the necessary operation. Caroline is
also brilliant and you know your furry friends will get nothing but the best of
care when they are in her hands. Emily had a very long road to follow after her
first operation. She had to have her wound re-opened 3 or 4 times and we
thought the leg wouldn't make it at times. I am so happy to say that it did and
Emily is flying around now just as she did before the injury.
As I was saying, Caroline is also fantastic. My cat Chesney injured
himself very badly one night around
Caroline also looked after me
dear Socks over Christmas as he was getting a course of injections and that was
the way the dates fell. But instead of it being a nuisance to her she send me a
number of texts informing me how was doing. That is unbelievable and it meant
so much to me. Again, it's peace of mind. But it's also extremely thoughtful
and caring.
I wish I was more articulate so I could get across how lucky and re assured I
feel knowing that the team at Pet Vet are there for my cats; Mud, Skinny,
Chesney, Emily and Jovi and my dog Mavis. They are guaranteed the best
possible care once they are there and that gives me a peace of mind that you
wouldn't get anywhere else that
I know of. They have the
perfect combination of genuine care, amazing knowledge and state of the art
equipment. I would never bring my pets to any other team.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to you all at Pet Vet.

Team: Annette Quegan
Vet: Annette Quegan and Caroline
Other: Marie and Stephanie
Address :Wexford Road, New Ross, Co Wexford and also at
Practise/Surgery Telephone:051 445484
Reason for Nomination:
Because of the care and
dedication they show to all pets they help from day to day and also to say a
very grateful thanks for all the help they have given me.
When we found Lucky (whose mother had been
killed) his eyes weren't even open but despite all the odds Lucky survived and
soon became a treasured part of the family. He is very placid, easy
going cat and really is a "family only" cat
Earlier this year Lucky was having difficulty in keeping his food down and also
had diarrhea. Annette and Caroline discovered Lucky had a tumour - the
day Annette rang to tell me that Lucky had a tumour was awful. It was
decided not to operate at that time as there was the suspicion of a second tumour
in his throat and following a bearim meal Lucky seemed to be keeping his food
down.
One day in May I noticed that Lucky seemed to be trying to go to the loo but
couldn't - we brought him to Pet Vet and Caroline decided to keep him in to
investigate - a cateter was inserted and I was allowed to take him home - he
got quite stressed staying in and Caroline thought it would be a good idea for
me to take him home but I had to bring him back each day for a check up
(Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday - Caroline was on hand each day of
the weekend and always at the end of the phone)
Lucky went downhill on the night of bank holiday Monday and when I returned
with him on the Tuesday morning he was kept in again. At lunch time on
Tuesday Caroline rang me to say that she and Annette had decided to operate
that day and I was welcome to visit before the operation - I did and it was one
of the longest evenings ever waiting for news - Caroline phoned me about 8 pm
to tell me that Lucky had survived the operation (they joined his small and
large intestine together) but it was still touch and go. Later that night
around 11 Annette phoned to say he had had a drink of water and was
comfortable.
The following day I got a
call around 9 to say he was still good and I could visit later - I couldn't
believe Lucky was so good when I saw him and continued to improve as the week
went on. I was allowed to bring him home on Friday and he had to visit
for daily checkups for a couple of weeks.
We then got the news that the tumour was maglinant but it was a slow growing
tumour. Lucky then had a course of daily injections to help him regain
his strenght (some of those were done at home Marie came over each evening to
give them)
What ever time Lucky has left (and I
don't think in those terms) - he has a quality of life now that he didn't have
earlier in the year. To look at him now he's a very happy and relaxed
chap and enjoying every minute of life. If Lucky could write it would
be to say a big thank you to Annette, Caroline, Stephanie and Marie and all at
Pet Vet for helping and caring for him.
The whole Pet Vet team are like a family and included in that family are all
the animals together with their owners.

Vet nomination – contact Enda Costigan
Reason for Nomination:
Enda has been our vet for approximately seven years. When he left the first practice he worked in
here in Greystones, we followed him, like many others we know, to his
next. He has a wonderful way with both
animals and their owners alike.
My animals took to him immediately.
He always gives patients a huge
amount of time and one never feels he is rushing you out to deal with the next
consultation. The reason I am
nominating Enda is that I feel he is a wonderful, caring and very competant
veterinary surgeon who we trust to give the best care to our animals.

Reason for Nomination:
It’s hard to know where to start to praise this veterinary practice
highly enough – from front desk to the veterinary surgeons themselves. They give the feeling of an intimate, caring,
personal family. Walking in there is
just like coming to see friends and there have been quite a few times over the
last four years when I have needed help and support of these friends quite
badly.
My nomination is for the whole practice because they are excellent, but
it’s hard to find the words to describe.
Enda whom I have the most dealings with when it comes to my beloved,
constantly ailing german shepherd !
In my 30 years of keeping dogs and others, I can honestly say I have
never come across a vet with the understanding, compassion and just a unique
empathy that Enda has.
Not alone does Sula managed to raise a lick for him no matter how poorly
– this man is so genuine and cares so much for both owners and animals – he
manages to have exactly the right words at the right times – and it makes so much
of a difference !! He deserves
recognition.
