Speaking at the awards ceremony, Damian O’Donohue from Pfizer Animal

importance of pets to people shines through in so many of the nominations
written by members of the general public for the Stronghold Awards each year,
with, for instance, pets often described as “treasures”, “special friends”
or “beloved members of the family.”
RETURNING TO A WELCOME
HOME
“For an awful lot of people,
ranging from teenagers to more elderly people, their pet makes the difference
between returning to an empty home, or returning to a “welcome home” when they
open their front door,” said Mr O’Donohue.
“Pets break down social barriers between people and help many people in
today’s busy and pressurised society to lead lives which are much less isolated
and much more fulfilling than they might be.”
“The fact that pets are such cherished
companions means that pet owners increasingly want the reassurance of knowing
they have access to high standards of veterinary care when things go wrong,”
said Mr O’Donohue. “The hundreds of

Another incident related to the author’s neighbour’s German Shepherd dog
who had been ill and also needed her assistance to be put to sleep. The owner was a very elderly man who is quite

SPECIAL JUDGE’S AWARD
A Special Judges Award for Lifetime
Achievement is
awarded to Paddy Treanor from Ark Veterinary (Treanor & Glynn) in Dun
Laoghaire, Co.
The Special
Judge’s Lifetime Achievement Award is in recognition of a career wholeheartedly
dedicated to the health and welfare of all types of animals, combined with a
commitment to delivering a consistently high standard of care throughout those
years. All of the nominations for Paddy
this year and over the last number of years of the Stronghold Awards, reflect
total professionalism, with pet owners saying that their animals have been
treated with superb care, love and attention.
This year
the owner of Bobbi, an 11 year old setter-cross dog, describes Paddy Treanor as
being “most humane.” She says
“He has a natural calmness about him
which is a wonderful trait. He is one of the kindest people I have ever
met and it’s been a pleasure dealing with him for so many years.”
That theme of providing a top
quality veterinary service over a long period of time is consistently reflected
in his nominations. One of Mr Treanor’s
customers from
An elderly
lady from Foxrock wrote to say that she relies
“dearly” on her dogs for company. The last three have all been Collie-Lab
Crosses. They have been called “Towser # 1”, followed not surprisingly by
….“Towser # 2” and followed even less surprisingly by…. “Towser # 3.”
Another lady says her family lived in the area since 1969 and they have had
LOTS of animals over the years. She
describes how some of her earliest memories are of going to visit Mr Treanor
with her Dad and with one or another of their animals. This
lady said in her nomination, “Our area
abounds with stories of this vet’s kindness to sick & distressed animals,
and also to their poor or eldery or very young owners. I cannot speak highly
enough of this good and gentle man and all the caring work he quietly
undertakes on behalf of the animals and their owners in our neighbourhood.” She
concludes by saying: “I really hope you
will appreciate his long, patient years of progressive service.”

Reason for Nomination:To whom it concerns,
I have 5 cats and one dog and they are
my pride and joy. I love them with all my heart. When they are unwell it means
the world to me to know that they will get the best possible care from my
chosen veterinary team, Pet Vet.
Nowhere in this country, or
any other for that matter, will you find better people to look after your pets
than here. It starts with the genuine care and compassion you meet at the desk
going in and follows through to the most knowledgeable and caring vets I have
ever met. They also have amazing high tech facilities that allow them to make a
diagnosis very quickly and accurately.
I have just lost one of my cats. His name was Socks. He was 12 years old and I
absolutely loved him with all my heart. He had been unwell for a while.. he had
contracted the FYV virus. For those of us who love our pets just like we love
any member of our family, we know how painful it is to lose them and we know
that anything that can help at the time means so much. That's how it was for me
during Socks' final moments. He was lying on my knee and I had a feeling that
the end was near.
I started to panic as I
thought maybe I should bring him to Annette in case he was suffering . So I
phoned Pet Vet and spoke to Annette. I decided to bring him down to her but he
slipped away just after I put the phone down. I phoned back to let them know
that I wouldn't be bringing him down after all. My heart felt like it was going
to split open after he was gone and while I knew there was nothing more she
could do I just felt better having made contact with Annette and her team.
When you are going
through that and a simple conversation on the phone and a text from your vet is
able to help you then let me say there is no price that you can put on that.
Earlier this year my little cat called Emily got a very deep and dangerous cut
on her back right leg. This was very serious as she had lost her front left leg
as a kitten. I found her about
There was a chance she would
lose the little leg. I was sick with worry as I didn't know how the little pet
would cope with two legs or if she would be able to cope at all. At around
Straight away I felt better
knowing Annette was watching over her. Then when I woke around
They brought her to the
Wexford surgery where Caroline carried out the necessary operation. Caroline is
also brilliant and you know your furry friends will get nothing but the best of
care when they are in her hands. Emily had a very long road to follow after her
first operation. She had to have her wound re-opened 3 or 4 times and we
thought the leg wouldn't make it at times. I am so happy to say that it did and
Emily is flying around now just as she did before the injury.
As I was saying, Caroline is also fantastic. My cat Chesney injured
himself very badly one night around
Caroline also looked after me
dear Socks over Christmas as he was getting a course of injections and that was
the way the dates fell. But instead of it being a nuisance to her she send me a
number of texts informing me how was doing. That is unbelievable and it meant
so much to me. Again, it's peace of mind. But it's also extremely thoughtful
and caring.
I wish I was more articulate so I could get across how lucky and re assured I
feel knowing that the team at Pet Vet are there for my cats; Mud, Skinny,
Chesney, Emily and Jovi and my dog Mavis. They are guaranteed the best
possible care once they are there and that gives me a peace of mind that you
wouldn't get anywhere else that
I know of. They have the
perfect combination of genuine care, amazing knowledge and state of the art
equipment. I would never bring my pets to any other team.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to you all at Pet Vet.

Reason for Nomination:
Hello. My name is Bud. My owner didn’t really want me to write this as
she doesn’t want to be seen as one of those obsessive types. Well I never listened to her before and I
don’t plan on listening to her now.
I’m a nine year old beautiful white west highland terrier (if I say so
myself) every vets dream. My owner
rescued me from
A few months later I decided that it was time to see herself again (well
I couldn’t have her forgetting about me now could I ). I had, had a small stroke. Annette picked up
on this straight away ran some bloods, sent me home on yummie tablets. Well the tablets are yummie inside a slice of
meat as I refused to take them any other way.
Now I have been living in Wexford over three years now and it was the
best move I ever made. However at the
time of writing this I was not a well puppy.
I visited Annette late one Friday night in complete pain. I’m lucky I have an observant owner as she
noticed I was very down in myself.
Annete noticed my lack of form as I wasn’t trying to attack her as I
normally do.
Now she ran more bloods which showed that I had some liver and kidney
problems and to top it all of a thyroid problem (more tablets). It was decided then that I would get a scan
from the radiologist just to see what was going on in there. With the exception of pancreatitis she found
that I had a tumour on my liver. This
was a major shock to everyone even Annette as I saw a tear in her eye. But I was still in great form and I even had
another scan done at a later stage and the tumour had not grown. Because of my age, my owner decided against
operating as the risks were too high.
However (there is always a however) around Christmas I started feeling
unwell again. My tumour had started to
bleed and it was only time before I would be visiting Doggy Heaven. I pulled through a few times and managed to
spend my last Christmas with my family.
My owner had to make that decision that is the worst decision anyone
ever has to make. Because I was so bad
and in such pain and because the tumour was bleeding she decided for my benefit
I had to be put to sleep in case the whole tumour ruptured. I now have pride of place in the front garden
where I had spent a lot of time anyway and my owner comes to visit me nearly
every day. I know I was a lucky dog to
get a second chance and I know I will never to forgotten.
Not a day goes by when I don’t
think of my little Bud. I miss him like
crazy. I still look for him to greet me
when I return from college. It was the
hardest decision that I ever had to make in my whole life.
Only for Annette and all her
help and advice I don’t think that I would have got through it. She is the most amazing person humans and
animals could meet. No matter what time
of day or night she was needed she was readily available. She is one of a kind and loves animals in the
same way.
No other vet I have met in my life would match her. I feel she is more
deserving of the award than ever before for her dedication to me and my little
Bud. As for the rest of the staff,
Caroline, Ailish, Marie, Emma and Stephanie, there really woudn’t be a Pet vet
without them.
They are a brilliant group of people and they are so dedicated to their
work, just as much as Annette.

Reason for Nomination:
Annette is superb. I have full
confidence in her skills. However I have
let Bonny speak (Bark ) ! for herself.
Enclosing her letter. Sr
Anne.
Hi Folks,
Bonny here, an ageing Pom, but thanks to Annette and her team am not bad
looking for my age. Indeed I often hear
remarks on how gorgeous I look especially after a visit to “Pet Vet” where Emma
dolls me up with a shampoo and grooming.
And the pedicure is the last word.
Its like padding on air when she is finished.
Last January I had major surgery.
I could feel this lump. Nothing
much at first but Annette spotted it.
Mind you she did nothing for a while but then one day she said it would
have to be removed. I sensed the solumnity
of the announcment and her concern.
There were great preparations made.
Special medication, diet and lots of attention. The day arrived and I knew it was
special. All my friends kept patting me
and wishing me well. I had no
fears. I am never afraid of Annette.
I heard them say when I was a youngster that I was the best dog in town
and that I never give trouble. So I live
up to my reputation. Anyhow it all went very well. I was handled so carefully and the “after
care” was great. They had special
cushions and beds for me so I wouldn’t have to climb the stairs. But I just flew up to my room to the
amazement of everyone. Couldn’t see what
the fuss was about.
However coming down was another story.
Poor Sr Anne had to carry me and she was so afraid of hurting me. In the end we came down on the stair lift
which was a great idea. Sr. Anne is the
person who looks after my needs but all the Sisters love me and take me for
walks. And I take care of them. I would not let anyone harm them.
I have just had a visit to Pet Vet and met all the gang. They told me I was in smashing form. My teeth were singled out for special
mention. Seemingly I am in far better
shape than many a younger dog and as you can see, my coat is terrific.
So its all thanks to Annette and her dream team of Caroline, Ailish,
Emma, Ciara, Jacinta and of course the lovely lady at the desk Stephanie. So I hope they get the Award they deserve.
I will be seeing them soon as Annette has a little job to do – removing
a growth on my eyelid, but as usual I am being well prepared for the
procedure. So it looks like there is a
brighter future ahead !
Cheerio

Because of the care and
dedication they show to all pets they help from day to day and also to say a
very grateful thanks for all the help they have given me.
When we found Lucky (whose mother had
been killed) his eyes weren't even open but despite all the odds Lucky survived
and soon became a treasured part of the family. He is very placid,
easy going cat and really is a "family only" cat
Earlier this year Lucky was having difficulty in keeping his food down and also
had diarrhea. Annette and Caroline discovered Lucky had a tumour - the
day Annette rang to tell me that Lucky had a tumour was awful. It was
decided not to operate at that time as there was the suspicion of a second
tumour in his throat and following a bearim meal Lucky seemed to be keeping his
food down.
One day in May I noticed that Lucky seemed to be trying to go to the loo but
couldn't - we brought him to Pet Vet and Caroline decided to keep him in to
investigate - a cateter was inserted and I was allowed to take him home - he
got quite stressed staying in and Caroline thought it would be a good idea for
me to take him home but I had to bring him back each day for a check up
(Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday - Caroline was on hand each day of
the weekend and always at the end of the phone)
Lucky went downhill on the night of bank holiday Monday and when I returned
with him on the Tuesday morning he was kept in again. At lunch time on
Tuesday Caroline rang me to say that she and Annette had decided to operate
that day and I was welcome to visit before the operation - I did and it was one
of the longest evenings ever waiting for news - Caroline phoned me about 8 pm
to tell me that Lucky had survived the operation (they joined his small and
large intestine together) but it was still touch and go. Later that night
around 11 Annette phoned to say he had had a drink of water and was
comfortable.
The following day I got a
call around 9 to say he was still good and I could visit later - I couldn't
believe Lucky was so good when I saw him and continued to improve as the week
went on. I was allowed to bring him home on Friday and he had to visit for
daily checkups for a couple of weeks.
We then got the news that the tumour was maglinant but it was a slow growing
tumour. Lucky then had a course of daily injections to help him regain
his strenght (some of those were done at home Marie came over each evening to
give them)
What ever time Lucky has left (and I
don't think in those terms) - he has a quality of life now that he didn't have
earlier in the year. To look at him now he's a very happy and relaxed
chap and enjoying every minute of life. If Lucky could write it would
be to say a big thank you to Annette, Caroline, Stephanie and Marie and all at
Pet Vet for helping and caring for him.
The whole Pet Vet team are like a family and included in that family are all
the animals together with their owners.

I witnessed her kindness when
I saw her with a couple with a young child. It appeared that their dog had a badly
injured paw. She had photographed, with her mobile phone, what had happened and how
she had fixed it and was re-assured the child that her pet would not be in pain

The practice has good facilities so diagnosis is swift. We are very pleased with the service we

Reason for Nomination:
I am registered with the Deise Veterinary Group in Dungarvan, Co
I find myself continually in awe and admiration of her many skills as a
vet. I have been attending her practice
since she came to
To illustrate my point, one of my
older dogs, Honey, who was 17 years old, had to be put to sleep after she went
into heart failure. I can’t
emphasise enough how gentle and caring she dealt with the dog and
ourselves. Obviously we were loath to
part with our little dog, but she gently and firmly lead us to consider only
the dog and make the right decision in the animals’ best interest.
A few weeks later my next door neighbour’s German Shepherd dog who had
been ill also needed her assistance to be put to sleep. The
owner is a very elderly man who is quite ill himself, I was present with him
when she came and quietly confidently and with great understanding for this ill

everything so dignified and with great consideration for the feelings of this

to administer to both animals and humans and yet it is clear that all that’s
done is directed towards the welfare of the animals under her care.
Judy, my 14 year old timid cat, has been attending Johnna with an
inoperative face tumour still in its early stages. Judy is normally very much afraid of strange
people and places and tends to bolt into the blue at the sight of both. To my astonishment she sat in front of
Johnna, gazing up into her eyes while Johanna patted her. I was gob smacked to see how quickly she had
gained the cat’s confidence literally in a matter of a few minutes and appeared
to have a mutual relationship with the cat on a par with my own.
I could go on and on about various incidents where both my animals and I
have been happier after a consultation with her. With all my animals she has exhibited concern
for good health care for them all, trying out the latest and best of medication
to enable them to lead a healthier happier life.
I therefore most enthusiastically
nominate Johanna Tambute Power for this award as I believe it would be
difficult to surpass her dedication, professionalism, compassion, and pleasant
manner in dealing with her patients. I
am convinced as I sing her praises that she would be a most worthy recipient
and a fine example of veterinary practice who deserves recognition and reward
for her many veterinary skills.
I have no hesitation therefore in recommending Johanna Tambute Power for
this award, she is an entirely dedicated veterinary practitioner and a credit
to her profession. And I really hope she qualifies for this
award – she truly deserves it ! -- End of

natural calmness about him which is a wonderful trait. Paddy is one of

Reason for Nomination:
My family have lived in this
area since 1969.
We have always had LOTS of animals.
Some of my earliest memories are of going to visit
Paddy with my Dad and one another of our animals.
Paddy has given the kindest,
excellent care to all our assorted dogs, cats, rabbits etc. for down through
the years.
He now looks after my children's pets!
Our area abounds with stories
of Paddy's kindness to sick & distressed animals, and also to their poor /
eldery / very young owners.
I cannot speak highly enough
of this good and gentle man and all the caring work he quietly undertakes on
behalf of the animals and their owners in our neighbourhood.
I really hope you will appreciate his
long, patient years of progressive service and award him your top prize!
I am happy to give further
information if you wish to call.
Thank you.

Reason for Nomination:
I am an elderly lady who
relies dearly on my lovely dogs for company. The last three have all been
Collie-Lab Xs. They have been called Towser #1, Towser #2 and Towser #3.
Paddy has always taken wonderful care of
my dogs and before that, my children’s dogs and assorted pets. He is always
very kind and takes time to explain whatever is the matter with my dogs
(abcesses, tumours, etc.) and to treat the matter as best as possible.
We have been through several
dogs together and I trust Paddy in all animal related matters. It is always a
pleasure to visit him and my dogs never mind going - a good sign I think! I
recommend Paddy for your top Award. Thank you.
